Scottish Rugby Schools Week supported by Saltire Energy has been happening all over the country in recent days – and Currie Chieftains have been working hard within their local area to engage with youngsters.
The Scottish Rugby Schools Week aims to increase opportunities for all girls and boys to get involved in rugby by supporting schools and teachers to deliver new rugby activities or highlight existing rugby activities whilst providing links to local clubs. Rugby really is a game for everyone.
Currie Chieftains has always been known as a strong community club serving Currie, Balerno and the surrounding areas on the outskirts of Edinburgh and their burgeoning Micros, Minis and Youth sections are testament to that.
Some of the local community schools that the Chieftains’ Head of Minis Kennedy Miller, Head of Youth Rugby Scott Gammie and other coach volunteers have engaged with in recent times include Juniper Green Primary School, Currie Primary School, Nether Currie Primary School, Dean Park Primary School, Kirknewton Primary School, Ratho Primary School and Bonaly Primary School.
The club donated a bag of balls to each school and also will be helping where needed to bring rugby taster sessions into that environment.
With the men’s Six Nations and the under-20 Six Nations about to come to a conclusion and the women’s Six Nations just about to start, this is the perfect time to get youngsters into the brilliant sport that teaches a lot of core values such as respect and teamwork.
This week the club has been really enthused by the engagement in Scottish Rugby Schools Week locally – and they have another exciting event coming up in a few days time for youngsters who are enjoying the game.
The Currie Chieftains Community Cup (CCCC) will take place on Wednesday, March 22 at Malleny Park from 1pm until 2.30pm.
The festival of rugby will involve a variety of rugby related games for all girls and boys of primary six age from the local schools.
After a difficult few years due to COVID, the club is eager to re-establish its connections with the local schools with the overall aim to promote the benefits of rugby as an alternative sport to the local community and a day like this one will help youngsters become familiar with the surroundings should they want to get involved with the Chieftains down the line.
Prospective new players who have enjoyed Scottish Rugby Schools Week and go onto have fun in the Currie Chieftains Community Cup, will then have the chance to head down to the club again on Saturday, March 25.
That day there will be a Minis beginners taster session before the Currie Chieftains men’s senior first XV take on Melrose in the Scottish Cup at 3pm. The youngsters and their families are then welcome to stay and watch the match, too with a heavily discounted offer for parents and carers.
All of which then leads into the Currie Chieftains Minis Festival on Sunday, April 2. On that day another Minis beginners taster session is set to be held and then those youngsters and their families would be able to stay and watch the tournament unfold.
