It was a “really good” day at Lenzie rugby club recently as nine Scotland women’s rugby squad members visited to meet members of the girls’ section.
Internationalists Evie Gallagher, Anne Young, Elis Martin, Alex Stewart, Hollie Cunningham, Rachel Philipps, Demi Swann, Holland Bogan and Aicha Sutcliffe were delighted to visit the club last week – after they had been at Balfron High School – and they got a great welcome.
The players, who are preparing for WXV Global Series action, engaged in rugby sessions across several age groups at the Viewfield playing fields on August 26, offering advice and encouragement as promising young players took to the pitch.
They also took part in a question-and-answer session, giving the youngsters present the opportunity to ask questions and hear first-hand about life as a Scotland cap.
Lenzie club development officer David McCrae said: “We had about 40 to 50 girls there on the day playing rugby and having fun.
“For them to get to see the Scotland players up close, chat to them and take part in training drills alongside them was really good.
“They were all smiling at the end of the visit so that was a good sign!
“Seriously though, days like this one are invaluable as the girls can see where they can go in the sport while a number of our women’s players were down too and even though they are a bit older they were inspired too.
“I came into post at the club last year and we had an under-12s and an under-14s girls’ set up and now we’ve managed to grow the section to include under-16s and 18s so things are really growing and are going in the right direction and lots of people are working hard at Lenzie to make that possible.”
