Five Edinburgh based players off to Kinsale

The PROJECX Waterboys are getting ready to head off to this weekend’s sevens tournament in Cork.

The Waterboys performed well at the Hong Kong 10s earlier this month and now players from Scottish clubs GHA, Boroughmuir, Watsonians, Howe of Fife, Currie and Marr will aim to make their mark at the Heineken Kinsale Sevens Rugby Festival in Kinsale, Ireland on Saturday and Sunday.

GHA’s Peter Jericevich will skipper the side and in the 12-man party there are five players from Edinburgh clubs.

They are Rory Drummond and Mike Fedo from Watsonians, Chris Laidlaw and Jordan Edmunds from Boroughmuir and Thomas Gordon from Currie.

Drummond, the back-row who has recently trained with Glasgow Warriors, said:  “This is my second tour with  the Waterboys following winning the Budapest Sevens in 2016.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my last tour and was impressed as to how professional the whole operation was. I am extremely happy to be selected again and grateful to the sponsors for making it possible.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about Kinsale and looking at the team we are taking I think we will have a strong chance of bringing silverware back to Scotland.”

Fedo, the Scotland Sevens cap, has recently returned from a spell in Australia and has helped Watsonians to the top of the Kings of the Sevens table.

Laidlaw, the cousin of Scotland skipper Greig, led Boroughmuir in the BT Premiership this term and he said:  “This will be my first Waterboys tour and I am thoroughly looking forward to it. I have heard so many good things from boys that have been on previous tours, I can’t wait to experience it for myself.

“I’m delighted to have been selected for Kinsale and know it will be an extremely tough couple of days, but a challenge I am looking forward to.

“I have heard a lot of good things about the event and know there will be a lot of quality teams taking part, so will be a case of us coming together quickly and working hard for one another.

“Sevens has always been a game I have enjoyed.”

Winger Edmunds made his mark with the Waterboys in Hong Kong in 2016 and is one of the best finishers in the BT Premiership.

“It’s always a honour to be picked for any tournament with the Waterboys and looking at the line up for Kinsale it’s a top class tournament so to be selected for the squad is a huge honour.

“Looking at the team I’ve got no doubts that we can go all the way and win the event.

“I am feeling good heading into the event having scored a few tries for Boroughmuir this season and having had been lucky enough to play and score tries for the Club XV against England.”

Completed the handful of Edinburgh based players in the squad is exciting forward Gordon.

“I’m really looking forward to playing because I’ve heard lots about the Waterboys and the great players who have played for them and the great trips they go on.

“My club season personally was bit of a disaster with injuries keeping me out for half of it and I’m only just returning from an injury so that makes playing in this tournament even better.

“I started my rugby playing days in my home town in New Zealand called Galatea. I then played for a few clubs back in NZ and since I came to Currie I have earned Scotland age-grade caps.”

Once again PROJECX, International Power and Water Investments, JA Resorts & Hotels, Ace Property Management , Sarcogent Solutions and Ethigen are supporting the team. They also have a range of new sponsors including Kyloe Restaurant (Signature Pubs), Orion Systems, St. Julians Advisory, 4 Navitas and Bureau.
