The PROJECX Waterboys gave it everything, but lost out to UBB Gavekal in the Hong Kong 10s Cup quarter-final this afternoon.
The Scottish select side were not known by many in Hong Kong prior to last year’s event at Hong Kong Football Club, but after great showings in 2016 and 2017 they have a number of new fans around the world.
In this last eight tie against the French outfit supplemented by some cracking Fijians, both sides gave as good as they got in the first 10 minutes.
Kerr Gossman of Glasgow Hawks made a try saving tackle while, in attack, Currie’s Harvey Elms and Danny McCluskey of Ayr had cracking breaks, but just could not get over the line.
It was 0-0 at half-time before in the 13th minute UBB took a 7-0 lead with a try under the posts.
The Waterboys’ heads did not go down though and they created another few chances. The French side defended well though and things ended that way.
The team can hold their head high and now go into a Plate semi-final with Kir Club Pyrenees at 4.45pm HK time.
Fraser Lyle, the Scotland Sevens cap playing very well for the Waterboys, said: “It is very frustrating to lose this match, but the guys have played some good rugby over the last two days and we now have to refocus as there is still an important trophy to play for.”
