WXV Global Series travel week: Niamh Wilson enjoying playing in the National League with Wigtownshire

Wigtownshire winger Niamh Wilson has already scored six tries in one match on her 21st birthday this season, but she is hoping that there are even more highlights to come throughout the rest of 2026/27.

The new-look six-team Arnold Clark Women’s National League is now a few weeks old and Wigtownshire have made a great start with four wins from four under their belts.

In total, the teams will play 10 games each through to February and then the winners will go up to the Premiership for next term.

And, as well as more league games coming up, the National League clubs will soon be rubbing shoulders with the eight current Premiership clubs in the revamped, two-pool Sarah Beaney Cup.

It is no surprise then that Niamh, who added to her six tries versus Ayr on September 20 with two in the victory over Greenock Wanderers last weekend, is looking forward to the coming months.

“I grew up in Stranraer and I started playing rugby at Wigtownshire when I was around 14 or 15,” she explained.

“I absolutely loved playing for the club through the youth system and since then coming through into the senior team has been amazing.

“The support from everyone at the club is fantastic, especially my coaches. Having the same coach in David Irvine [who works alongside Allan McMaster with the seniors now] working with me through from youth to senior rugby has been brilliant. He helps me to get better and he always manages to keep me in check even if we have our moments!

“Seriously though, as a team we have started the season off strongly by everyone pulling together as a team and trusting our coaches as they do a brilliant job for us week in and out and give us confidence before we head out onto the pitch.

“We are quite a small club so there are challenges at times and quite a bit of travel, but it’s been amazing to see the girls really come together and play for each other in every game in recent weeks.”

Niamh spends a lot of time around the club and thinking about rugby even away from matchdays because she is a development officer at Wigtownshire.

“I go around the schools locally coaching kids how to play rugby while also coaching at the club,” she explained.

“The job along with playing myself can make things busy, but I’m really enjoying my rugby just now I’ve been focusing on just taking things one game at a time.

“I have also been putting the work in at gym to make sure that I have been able to put 100 percent in whenever matches come around, but that is quite easy when you are playing in a team with your friends.

“This weekend we are on our travels and we are expecting a tough match up in Inverness against Highland on Saturday.

“They have some good forwards and some speedy backs and it’s always a good game against them so we can’t wait to go up there and see which way the score falls.

“If we play to our best then hopefully the score will fall on our side in the end.”

This weekend’s National League fixtures are here.
