Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby both suffered home defeats in the Celtic Challenge at the weekend.

On Saturday lunchtime, Glasgow were 19-12 up after 55 minutes, but Welsh side Gwalia Lightning found another gear in the closing stages to win 31-19 at Scotstoun.

The try scorers for Glasgow, who now have one win and two losses from three games in the competition, were Sky Phimister, Freya Walker and Gemma Bell with co-captain Ceitidh Ainsworth kicking two conversions.

The Warriors’ head coach Lindsey Smith said:  “That was frustrating.

“We played well in parts again, but it’s been story for the last couple of games for us when you don’t look after the ball and cough it up you get punished for it.

“A game like this is a learning experience for a lot of the girls. They’re still relatively young and playing at this level under this type of pressure.

“We have the ability to attack and score tries, but going forward we must look after the ball better and we are still searching for an 80-minute performance.”

Later the same day, Edinburgh Rugby were soundly beaten by two-time defending champions Wolfhounds from Ireland 50-12 at Hive Stadium.

Cieron Bell and Talei Tawake scored tries and Nicole Marlow converted one for Edinburgh, but the visitors were too strong.

Edinburgh head coach Claire Cruikshank said:  “Disappointment is the emotion after that.

“There was some good stuff, but things just didn’t stick and we weren’t accurate enough on both sides of the ball.

“If you’re not accurate against quality opponents then you get punished.”

On Sunday, Clovers battled to a 15-12 away win at Brython Thunder.

In round four, Edinburgh are away to Gwalia on Saturday with Glasgow at Wolfhounds on Sunday on the same day that the Clovers host Brython Thunder.
