W6Ns Ireland week: Thomson reveals a torn quad is holding her back while Skeldon is “absolutely gutted” to be out

Lisa Thomson has revealed that a torn quad stopped her rehab journey in its tracks just as she was looking to try and get back playing for Scotland towards the end of the ongoing Women’s Six Nations following a long-term achillies injury.

Late last year, the 28-year-old centre, who has 75 caps for her country and is a two-time Olympian, announced via social media that she was injured.

At that time the Trailfinders Women’s player said:  “Seven days before our Women’s Rugby World Cup opener in England in the summer I felt a pop in my achilles. The MRI scan at the time showed a partial tear, but we managed throughout the World Cup.

“After a few weeks off post-tournament and settling back into things at the club, the pain became too much to push through and the tear was bigger so surgery was the best option.

“This was definitely not the start to the season we’d planned, but a few months of proper rehab and backing the girls from the sidelines now beckons.”

As a result of that achilles issue she was not named in the initial Scotland squad for the Six Nations earlier this year, but did some of her rehab around the group during the early weeks of the tournament.

She then officially joined the squad again for the first time since the World Cup ahead of last week’s France match.

Thomson was not back fully fit in time for that round four 69-28 loss at Hive Stadium on May 9 in the end, but there were still hopes in some quarters that she might be able make an appearance against Ireland in round five at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin this coming weekend.

That will not now be the case and she said on Instagram:  “Six months post op and the final week of achilles rehab was literally days away, but unfortunately a torn quad means I’ll be rehabbing a wee bit longer.

“Massive thank you to the physios and coaches who fully bought in to the push for getting me back.

“Still so grateful to have been around the group this Six Nations through it all. It has kept me going more than they will ever know.

“The road is longer than planned, but the goal won’t change – trust in the universe and all that. See you next season.”

Meanwhile, Thomson’s fellow Hawick native Lana Skeldon has also posted on Instagram about the neck injury that saw her miss the France match and will see her miss the Ireland encounter too.

The 32-year-old, 87-cap Bristol Bear said:  “The crazy roller coaster continues – absolutely gutted for my season to come to an end so abruptly. This team gives me so many reasons to smile but this hurts.

“However, this tournament has given me memories that will last a lifetime. Playing at Murrayfield in front of 30,000 fans, a chance to captain Scotland and the opportunity to pull on the thistle [three times more] which will never grow old on me.

“A massive thank you to everyone who continues to support me on this wild journey.

“Time to recover, reset and go again.”
