With the Women’s Rugby World Cup just around the corner, lots of Scotland supporters will be watching Saturday’s Summer Test in Ireland with interest.
And the most passionate and invested supporter watching the stream of the 2pm kick-off match from Cork via BBC iPlayer is set to be Hannah Ramsay’s proud grandad as he views from his home.
Ramsay, the 21-year-old Edinburgh University and Edinburgh stand-off, made her debut off the bench last time out against Italy for eight minutes and now she starts for her country for the first time.
“My granddad is my biggest fan,” Ramsay said.
“We have Edinburgh Rugby season tickets together and he’s going to watch this game on the TV.
“He’ll definitely be shouting at the TV and cheering! His support and the support of the rest of the family means everything to me.
“Other members of my family weren’t able to make it to Italy last week, but they’re coming to watch this week so I’m really excited about that.
“They’re not actually really into rugby or weren’t before I began to play, but the support they give me is brilliant.”
A taster session at her primary school in South Queensferry first got her into rugby and then, after time at Linlithgow and Livingston, she played for Corstorphine Cougars in the top flight.
In 2024/25, the under-20 and Scottish Touch cap who was once out for a long spell with an ACL knee injury was turning out for Edinburgh University in the BUCS Super Rugby competition before joining up with Edinburgh for the Celtic Challenge and now Scotland.
Looking back on the Italy game and becoming cap 248 for Scotland,
Ramsay recounted: “It went really fast, it was a bit of a whirlwind.
“But I went on the pitch with Lisa Cockburn which was really nice because it was a big game for her as well and having Nelly [Helen Nelson, the regular stand-off] on the pitch was an unreal experience.
“I loved every second of it, it was so good despite the loss and a big moment for me.
“I’m buzzing for this one now. I think I’ve just got the right people around me like Caity Mattinson, Lisa Thompson and Emma Orr. They’re just going to make my job so much easier I hope.
“It’s just an amazing opportunity and a real privilege. I think I’ve really developed as a player working with the experienced Scotland players and even since Stephen Shingler came in as our new attack coach recently that has helped too as he used to be a 10.
“I feel I have found my voice as a 10 now.”
