Women’s club rugby champions: 11 wins out of 12 sees Biggar win the West One title and leaves them buzzing

There is no doubt that finished second by a point in the table last year to winners Ayr really hurt Biggar, but they made amends this time around.

In Arnold Clark Women’s West One in 2024/25 they won 11 out of their 12 games to finish on 54 points out of a possible 60 and top of the tree in the seven-team division.

Emelia Knights and Ali Orr are the co-captains of the team and the latter said:  “Everyone is very pleased to have clinched the title, a few years of hard work has gone into this from coaches and players.

“We fell short last year by finishing second in the league so we are buzzing that it is our turn to give the play-offs a go. We know we still have a lot of work to put in, but we are very excited for what is to come.

“A key win in the league was at West when we went down two tries early on, but the girls stuck in to grind out the [29-24] win. West always gave us a really competitive game and it is always a challenge for us.

As I mentioned, we cannot wait to get going in the regional play-off series [This will be alongside the Caledonia North One campions Shetland, the to be confirmed Caledonia Midlands East One champions and the side that finished bottom in the Premiership which was Stewartry – the winner of that mini competition will then be in the top flight in 2025/26] and look forward to the challenge of going against some up and coming teams.”

Biggar have been a trailblazer for girls and women’s rugby in recent years and part of that is down to the stock that the Hartree Mill club place on that section of the game.

“The club is fully behind us and is full of young talent coming up through the ranks and it just shows the potential we have if we can get that all important promotion,” Orr continued.

“It is testament to the work that goes on at academy level, nurturing the young talent and helping them grow into all-round rugby players, that we have such great talent coming through and pushing the senor players.

  • Of the 10 women’s senior leagues in Scotland currently, eight of the champions have been confirmed in the shape of Corstorphine Cougars, Shetland, Biggar, Kelso, Bishopton, Lochaber, Marr and Dalkeith and they have all recently lifted silverware.

In the new year the Caledonia Midlands East One champions and the Caledonia North Two champions will be confirmed.
