On Friday evening up-and-coming female players from a number of different clubs will get the chance to perform on the Scotstoun pitch at half-time during the Scotland v Ireland Women’s Six Nations clash (7.35pm, live on BBC ALBA).
The women’s game in this country continues to grow apace and it is great to see youngsters getting the chance to rub shoulders with the national team and play in front of family and friends in a big crowd.
Under-15 teams from Cartha Queens Park, Stirling County, Hilhead/Jordanhill and Biggar are the lucky ones who will be out on the Glasgow Warriors’ pitch.
Alex Donaghy, the driving force behind the girls section at Cartha, said: “What a great opportunity this is for the girls and they are, rightly, ver excited.
“Over the last few years the girls section has really grown at Cartha and we have teams at under-15 and 18 levels as well as a number of players who come along for fun and enjoyment.
“To get the chance to be involved on an international match night in their own city is the icing on the cake for the under-15 girl who have worked so hard already this season and they will be able to show a wider audience just how good they are.”
Ruth Easton may just be 17 and still at school, but she helps coach the Cartha under-15 team and is very positive about women’s rugby moving forward and continuing to grow.
“I used to play the game, but suffered a couple of injuries, so I thought let’s get into coaching and help others learn and enjoy the game I love,” she said.
“The girls at Cartha are so eager to learn and it is great to see them improving all of the time and taking new skills into games.
“They work very hard as a group to get better so to see them running out at Scotstoun will be very special. My dream is that one day some of these players will go on and play for Scotland themselves and hopefully an occasion like this can inspire them.”
