Rugby in the north east and at Highland RFC going from strength-to-strength after Scotland visit

Scotland’s best rugby players may be in Portugal this week as their build-up to the World Cup continues, but they have fond memories of starting their summer up at Highland RFC’s Canal Park.

This is week three of the extended squad working hard under head coach Gregor Townsend and the players are sweating it out in the Algarve.

A fortnight ago their work ahead of the showpiece event in Japan in September, October and November saw them work their way up from Stirling to Inverness and, once in the latter, the squad spent a few days at Highland.

Of that time Townsend said:  “It was really beneficial.

“We wanted to do something at the start of our World Cup camp that was a bit different. We had an idea of somewhere in the north and our management team were really impressed with the facilities.

“Canal Park is a fantastic set-up and is great template for other clubs to look at. Obviously, it cost money to build, but the feel around the place is there.

“It helped facilitate what we wanted to do rugby wise but also that factor of us coming together in a place not many have been.

“To see this beautiful part of Scotland has been excellent.”

And Highland director of rugby Iain Chisholm believes having the best male players in the country in Inverness was a great boost.

“It was brilliant,” he said.

“It was a really interesting couple of days. On the first day they were up here the squad had a closed session and were very complimentary of the facilities while myself and some other members of staff were able to speak with some of the strength & conditioning coaches, analysts and Gregor himself to get some information and insight into what they do.

“That was invaluable and then on day two things went really well.

“The rugby development department from Scottish Rugby engaged really well with the clubs and schools in the local area to make sure there was a big turnout and the kids loved playing Tartan Touch and getting a chance to meet the Scotland players.”
