Caity Mattinson says she is “delighted” to have joined Scottish Rugby as women’s pathway skills coach.
In the role, which is supported by funding from sportscotland, Mattinson, the former England and Scotland scrum-half, will support the coaching and delivery of the women’s National Talent Pathway (NTP), National Academy Programme (NAP) and wider pathway programme within the governing body.
Having been involved in coaching during her playing career, it is something Mattinson continued following her retirement towards the end of last year, the 30-year-old serving as schools rugby manager at Banbury RFC and academy coach at Coventry Rugby.
She also worked with Scotland women’s under-21s during the 2026 Six Nations series and on their recent trip to Italy.
In her new role with Scottish Rugby, she will lead the development and delivery of a specialist skills programme across the pathway whilst supporting with the talent identification and player profiling process.
The skills programme will include Mattinson providing specialist support in kicking, half-back play and coordinating specialist front-row skills and throwing provision across the pathway.
“I’m delighted to be coming back to Scotland and into this role,” Mattinson, who played for a number of clubs in her career after starting out at Tynedale, said.
“I coached across a big range of environments throughout my playing career and since retiring have thrown myself into every opportunity that’s come my way.
“One of those opportunities was to be involved with Scotland under-21s across the Six Nations period. I loved the chance to help shape the next generation and finished the campaign desperate for more time coaching that group.
“Being offered a full-time role in the pathway is an incredibly exciting next step in my coaching journey and one that I hope allows me to not only positively impact the players coming through but also give me the chance to continue learning and pushing my career forward.
“I can’t wait to get started.”
Scottish Rugby’s head of women’s performance and pathways Andy Rhys Jones added: “I am delighted that Caity has returned to Scottish Rugby.
“Having represented Scotland during her playing career and continued to develop her coaching experience since retiring, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will be invaluable in supporting the next generation of players across our National Talent Pathway, National Academy Programme and wider pathway programme.
“Caity is a well-respected and talented coach who we know will contribute massively to the development of our players across the pathway.
“We are committed to providing our young players with the best possible environment to progress their skills and fulfil their potential.
The support secured through sportscotland funding is hugely appreciated and will enable us to provide vital coaching support as players progress through our pathway system.”
Mattinson won seven caps for England between 2017 and 2018, however, in early 2022 the player – and Scottish Rugby – took advantage of World Rugby’s laws and she switched allegiances.
She went on to play in two World Cups, help the national side win WXV 2 in 2023 and also represented Team Scotland in sevens at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022. She earned 37 XVs caps for the Scots.
