WXV Global Series fallow week: The Hills are alive and they are looking to continue good season

Hillhead Jordanhill have had a strong start to the Arnold Clark Women’s Premiership season and they are keen to keep that going this weekend.

Last season, the Hughenden side finished fifth overall in the eight-team league after stages one and two.

They also reached the Sarah Beaney Cup final, but missing out on a top four spot in the league after stage one really hurt the players.

As a result, they were keen to get off to a quick start this term and they have certainly done that, three bonus point wins from three seeing them sit second in the table.

The top four/bottom four split comes in November after seven games and, ahead of their fourth match, leaders and reigning champions Stirling County and third placed Biggar also have 15 points from 15.

That makes Saturday’s game away to Biggar an exciting one and Hills captain Siobhann McGinley said: “Biggar are a strong side at home and they have started this season really well so we know what sort of a challenge we will be facing this weekend.

“It will be a tough 80 minutes and we will have to play at our best, but I’ve got faith and confidence in our team and what we’ve done leading up to this point in the season that we can go there and put in a strong performance.

“We will be after an 80-minute performance and we’re all looking forward to it.

“These are the kind of games that you want to be involved in and everyone has been enjoying getting down to training recently and putting the graft in.

“There are quite a few new faces in the quad this year and I think that has just helped to freshen things up a bit and give us all a bit of a new perspective.

“The players who have been here for a few years were hurt by what happened last year and I think the combination of the newer and the more experienced players has been working really well.

“We have been playing heads up rugby in attack, defending hard and working as a team and long may that continue.

“We are also playing with smiles on our faces and that is always good!”

Bill MacDonald and Tim Brown, one a very experienced coach and the other a former men’s under-20 cap who plays for Ayr, have come together to coach the team this year and, with healthy numbers at training, they have been able to put together some really good sessions.

David Mitchell has also been coming in and doing some sessions too focusing on attack and McGinley added: “The coaches came in at quite short notice, but, along with the players, they have worked really hard to get us into the position we are in now.

“We are playing a style of game that we enjoy while having had the likes of Scottish Rugby contracted players Rianna Darroch and Holly McIntyre available to us at times has been really good because they bring a level of professionalism to things and have high standards.

“We will just keep taking things game by game just now, keep building and keep enjoying trying to push for a top four spot come the end of stage one.”
