Greenock Wanderers and Wigtownshire both remain unbeaten after two rounds of Arnold Clark Women’s National League action following round two triumphs.
Wanderers are top of the six-team table with 10 points from 10 after backing up their opening bonus point win at Ayr with a 72-5 home bonus point victory over Dundee Valkyries on Sunday.
Co-captain Julia Ballingall (3), Orla McAllister (2), Tina Hemphill (2), Louise Reddy, Daria Sassarini, Caitlyn Thomson, Elisha Hope and Rachel Towle scored tries for Greenock versus Dundee at Fort Matilda with Hope kicking six conversions.
Greenock head coach Graeme Knox said: “It was another big win for the team on Sunday and a good performance and we will look to keep building.”
Rennie Guthrie-Dawber scored a try for Dundee who are fourth in the table.
Wigtownshire are second in the standings and only behind Greenock on points difference after a 40-27 bonus point home triumph over West of Scotland on Sunday.
Sophie Mann (2), skipper Carla Campbell, Holly Murdoch, Amy Vance and Isla Campbell scored tries for Wigtownshire with Sophie Mann kicking five conversions.
“It was a really good game and we always knew it was going to be tough coming up against our closest rivals from last year in West One,” Wigtownshire head coach Allan McMaster said.
“There are plenty of work ons, but it was a really good result.
“Our player of the match was debutant Bryony McCaw who has come to us from Dumfries. It was her first game since moving from the backs into playing second-row and she looked like she had always played there, she was excellent.
“Young Rhianna Bodle was back of the match and she carried very well at 13 and created chances for the outside backs.
“The opposition player of the match went to Abby Walker on debut. Playing in the front-row, she really anchored her scrum and grew into the game as it went along.”
West are third in the standings after picking up a four-try bonus point here thanks to scores from Jade Scott (2), Rosie Broadhurst, Halima Sikiru and Bella Ashley with Sheila Legus-Christman kicking one conversion.
Captain Scott said: “We knew that this game was going to be a tough test and it proved to be exactly that.
“A number of early injuries forced us into a significant reshuffle, but the girls showed great resilience and adaptability to deal with the changes. It was a challenging situation, with our bench being used a lot earlier than we would have liked, but the way the team responded was a real positive to take from the game.
“A special shoutout to Rachel Morrison who had an outstanding game. She started at flanker, moved to nine and finished at 10 and she showed incredible adaptability and put in a massive shift when the team needed her.
“In defence, Maddie Carter was a force to be reckoned with, putting in strong, dominant tackles throughout the full 80 minutes.
“There’s plenty for us to take from the game.”
Ayr could not raise a squad to travel to Highland on Saturday and they are bottom of the table with the Inverness side fifth.
