Scotland’s up-and-coming backline talent Lucia Scott has revealed she actually broke both her hands in the lead up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup as she missed out on the showpiece event in England.
The 21-year-old suffered an injury in the 27-21 Summer Test defeat to Ireland in Cork in early August when she was winning her seventh cap. In the first half of that game she scored an excellent try, her second for her country, and her missing the big dance was a blow for her and the team.
At the time the final World Cup squad was named it was reported that Scott, who plays full-back or on the wing, had broken one hand, but she has now stated in an interview with the Loughborough Lightning website that both her hands were broken.
“I broke both of my hands,” Scott said.
“I broke a bone in one hand in the warm-up and then in the first minute of the game in two separate moments. So I got ruled out and it was a bit rough.”
Around the same time as Scotland were making their mark and reaching the quarter-finals, Scott had moved to Lightning from PWR rivals Gloucester-Hartpury.
She has been finding her feet in her new surroundings in recent months and, last weekend, scored a try on her league debut as they defeated Leicester Tigers 50-15 with a bonus point in round five at home.
Only five minutes of the encounter had passed when she was summoned from the bench to replace Bulou Mataitoga who had a head injury.
“It was a little bit of a shock to the system, you never expect to go on that early, but you’ve got to be ready for anything,” she stated.
“I was a little bit like a deer in the headlights, but I got into the game fairly quickly and scored a try.
“I’ve been trying to find my feet a little bit, but I am really happy with the move and the girls here are lovely and everything is going really well.”
For her try in that game she gleefully scooped up Bo Westcombe-Evans’ inch-perfect grubber kick to score with her first touch just 129 seconds after coming on.
On Sunday, Scott starts at full-back as fourth placed Lightning travel to third placed Saracens in round six.
