Lucia Scott says she was “buzzing” when she went over for her crucial try for Scotland versus Wales at the weekend.
With Scotland leading 17-12 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff the game was in the balance heading into the final quarter as both sides looked for a crucial Women’s Six Nations round one triumph.
Scott, the 22-year-old Loughborough Lighting back three player, only came off the bench for winger Shona Campbell for her eighth cap in the 63rd minute and by the 68th minute she was scoring.
With debutante Demi Swann also on with Scott, the latter scored a brilliant try versus the 14 players of Wales – No.8 Bryonie King was in the sin bin at the time – when she collected a lovely kick by centre Meryl Smith and went over. Stand-off Helen Nelson converted and it was 24-12.
The game finished 24-19 to set the Scots up nicely for a big home game coming up in round two versus England this coming Saturday at Murrayfield.
Reliving the score for a Vodafone Player Playback video, Scott said: “I was calling for the ball quite early on and I was like ‘Mez has got this in the bag’ and then she slotted an absolutely ‘worldy’ across to me.
“I had been working all week in training in the lead up to the game on high ball catching with Ioan [Cunningham, the senior assistant coach] so a shout out to him.
“And once I had the ball I just cut inside and saw a bit of space and was able to go over for the try so I was buzzing with that.”
The try capped a positive return to a Scotland shirt after a tough time for the former Gloucester-Hartpury player.
She suffered an injury in the 27-21 Summer Test defeat to Ireland in Cork early last August when she was winning her seventh cap. In the first half of that game she scored an excellent try, her second for her country, and she went on to missing the Rugby World Cup which was a blow for her and the team.
At the time the final World Cup squad was named it was reported that Scott had broken one hand, but in December she stated in an interview on the Loughborough Lightning website that both her hands had in fact been broken.
Now back for club and country, she has an exciting future ahead of her.
The former England under-18 cap joined up with the Scotland under-20 squad firstly in 2024 and impressed then age-grade head coach Claire Cruikshank and backs coach Chris Laidlaw.
Her dad and grandparents have links to the Glasgow area before the family moved south.
Scott began her rugby career at Bicester Rugby Club in 2008, remaining there until 2015 before joining Witney Rugby Club and latterly Gosford Rugby Club.
She was then studying at Hartpury College and Hartpury University and was with Gloucester-Hartpury before moving to Lightning ahead of this season. Her Scotland debut came in late 2024 versus Wales with a first try of three now coming against Fiji.
