Biggar, Stirling County X 2 and Stewartry were girls’ winners at the Murrayfield complex on Sunday on National Youth finals day.

On the same day, Currie Chieftains finished on top of the under-18 Bowl standings and Biggar won the under-16 Plate by edging out Ayr 20-14 at Hartree Mill.

The day before, Garioch won 29-7 at Orkney to lift the under-16 Quaich while, on December 7, Moffat defeated Cambuslang 29-24 to win the under-18 Plate and Greenock Wanderers won at Dalkeith 39-24 to be victorious in the under-16 Bowl.

In terms of the games held at the Murrayfield complex on Sunday, Biggar defeated Dunfermline 48-25 to win the under-18 Cup final in the main bowl.

Richard Mellanby, a member of the Biggar coaching team, said:  “The girls were excited to play on the main pitch at Murrayfield and we knew Dunfermline were a good side who would test us.

“We felt that if we stayed patient and our forwards put in the hard yards to get our backline into space then we would start finding gaps and so it proved, but we had to really work for every try.

“It was just great seeing the girls playing such expansive rugby on such a big occasion.”

Nick Mathieson, one of the Dunfermline coaching team, said:  “We started the game well and were right in things at half-time, but then Biggar got their strike runners into the match and took the game away from us.

“The character and spirit in this squad – which includes players from Dunfermline, Dundee Rugby and Glenrothes – then shone through as we scored three excellent tries towards the end of the game and everyone involved can be very proud of their efforts.”

Stirling County beat Preston Lodge at Hive Stadium 53-0 to claim the under-18 Shield and Ross Haddow, one of the County coaches, said:  “We wanted the team to go out there and express themselves on a good surface at the Hive and they did that.

“I thought the forwards and backs linked well, got on the front foot and just kept going.”

Adam Crozier, the girls’ community coach at PL and under-18 girls’ head coach, said:  “We were playing against a very strong opponent, but the girls gave it everything and to have played at the Hive is a big achievement for them as we continue to grow the girls section of the club.”

County also won the under-16 Cup on the same ground by getting the better of Dundee Rugby 28-24 after a cracking contest.

Stirling County head coach Al Wilson said:  “The girls have worked hard all season and in this game they really had to dig hard and battle for each other and they did just that.

“Dundee beat us recently in the league match and we knew this would be another tough game because they are a good side, but our girls had learnt from that one and implemented those things here.

“When we were 17-7 down no one panicked and in the second half with the wind we played well and made the most of our possession.”

Owen Hughes, Craig Shearer and Dan Gilmour coach Dundee and Hughes said:  “The girls are obviously frustrated not to have got the win here, but we could not be prouder of them as a group.

“They have won the league and come on leaps and bounds this season so we are feeling very positive going forward.”

And Stewartry saw off Highland 38-31 on pitch one to win the under-16 Shield.

Stewartry head coach Ralph Spernagel said:  “We are so proud of the girls, they came out and played the game we know they are capable of and then battled hard when Highland came back into things. They are a close-knit group and that shone through.”

Highland’s Michael Rose, who coaches the squad alongside Graeme Lyon, said:  “We got off to a slow start and Stewartry played well, but I could not be prouder of the team for the way that they fought back and made a real game of things.”
