Wigtownshire say this is a “historic moment” after they won the Arnold Clark Women’s West One title.
Back on December 7, they went into their last match of 12 knowing that they had to secure a bonus point win at home to Hillhead Jordanhill’s second team to finish top of the standings.
And they did just that, winning 36-0 to finish on 50 points to Hills’ 49 to spark celebrations.
When you think that the club also won the Women’s National Shield at Murrayfield back I April it is no surprise that they will look back on 2025 fondly.
On December 7 the club posted on Facebook: “Today our ladies played their final league game with everything on the line, a title decider that would crown champions or settle for a close second.
“They left absolutely everything out there, battling through the pouring rain and coming away with a dominant 36–0 win, securing five points and taking us to the top of the league with 50 points!
“This is a historic moment, the first league title ever won in ‘Shire ladies history. What a journey it has been, especially after lifting the Shield at Murrayfield only eight months ago.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us over the past decade, from the beginnings in the National Development League to where we stand now.
“A massive thank you as well to all of our team and player sponsors, coaches and supporters, we truly could not have done this without you.”
To make everyone at the club even more excited since then, their captain Neve Finlay has been named in Glasgow Warriors’ Celtic Challenge squad.
“We are absolutely thrilled to share the fantastic news that our captain and club development officer, Neve Finlay, has been selected for Glasgow Warriors,” they stated on Facebook.
We couldn’t be prouder of Neve, her dedication, leadership, work ethic and constant commitment to both the women’s team and the club as a whole make this achievement truly well deserved.
“She continues to inspire those around her, on and off the pitch, and we can’t wait to see her take this next step in her rugby journey. We’ll be cheering her on every step of the way.”
