Women’s club rugby: Howe’s about that as the Calcutta Cup makes an appearance at Harlequins training

Howe Harlequins’ women’s rugby players were given a surprise recently when the famous Calcutta Cup silverware made an appearance at training.

On a Tuesday evening early in November, the Howe players were preparing for a home Arnold Clark Caledonia Midlands East One match with Strathmore when they had a chance to get their photo taken with the trophy that is played for when Scotland men and England men meet.

“Many women start playing rugby without truly having any background in the sport, so many of our squad had never heard of the Calcutta Cup or, if they had, didn’t quite understand the history, so it was amazing to have it at our training session,” Victoria Renwick from the club explained.

“Every one of us was in awe about just how beautiful and intricate it is and enjoyed learning a bit more about it.

“Many quickly jumped on the opportunity to hold it and get a picture, stating it was the best training session ever!

“It created a fabulous buzz for the women, especially in a time of low numbers due to injury and it really increased team morale.”
