The Carrick women’s team was only set up in April 2024, but just a few months later they have celebrated success.
Recently it was confirmed that they had topped the Arnold Clark Women’s West Aspiring League in their debut season
Praising the players, lead coach Dave McGee said: “The majority of you had never played rugby before and have gone on to be league winners, you all deserve the accolades and praise that is coming your way.”
He added: “We started April 2024, only five of the girls had played before. We got ‘game ready’ by training for game situations and we also used our second team as opposition for us to test game scenarios
“The girls have worked extremely hard and deserved the success.
“And we really hope this last few months helps us grow our girls and women’s section even more. We have around five of the under-16 girls consistently training with us and I feel you can see their development by training with older players.”
The club’s director of rugby Andrew Gamble added: “The growth of this team has been nothing short of remarkable and the success is a testament to the hard work, determination and team work that has been put in. A big thank you to the coaching team for their outstanding coaching and guidance – your efforts have truly made a difference.”
Carrick are now in the National Bowl and drew 15-15 with Caledonian Thebans on February 16.
- Of the 11 women’s senior leagues in Scotland currently, all of the champions have been confirmed in the shape of Corstorphine Cougars, Shetland, Biggar, Kelso, Bishopton, Lochaber, Marr, Dalkeith, Broughton, Caithness and Carrick.
