Women’s club rugby champions: Marr-vellous effort from the Marrlequins as they win league in first competitive season

Marr have had a few months to remember as they won Arnold Clark Women’s West Three.

In the first stage of the league season they won five of their six games.

That meant that they topped the seven-team standings at that point and then they, Dumfries Saints, East Kilbride and Lenzie, as the top four, progressed to Division One in stage two of the West Three season.

Marr then won two and drew one of their remaining fixtures to finish on 37 points out of a possible 45 overall and ended up top when the league campaign came to a close.

Siobhan Reid, the Marr captain, said:  “We are really pleased to have won the West Three league in our first year playing competitive rugby.

“It is a true reflection of the time invested by our head coach Andy Reid and the rest of the coaching team combined with the commitment to improvement from our players and it has got us to this point.

“A key point in our journey this season came in the second half of our game against Glasgow University where we tapped into our attacking mindset and that resulted in an important bonus point win [41-25].

“We are excited for the future and the current squad are just at the start of our growth trajectory.

“We are proud of what we have created within the club for the younger players to aspire to and we strongly believe that you have got to see it to believe that you can be it.

“Now we have a huge group of Marr girls growing up with the goal of becoming a Marrlequin one day which will hopefully, in time, provide a pipeline to regional and national opportunities.”

In the new year the Caledonia Midlands East One champions and the Caledonia North Two champions will be confirmed.
