Women’s club rugby champions: Skipper “so proud” of squad following Caithness success

Caithness Krakens rugby skipper Nicola Mackay says she is “so proud” of the squad after they won the Arnold Clark Women’s Caledonia North Two title recently.

Last season Caithness, who later went on to win the National Plate for 2023/24, were pipped to the league title by Highland, but they have been the frontrunners all the way this time around.

They ended up winning six out of six games and the icing on the cake that clinched the silverware was a 41-10 home bonus point triumph over nearest challengers Orkney Dragons in January.

Mackay said:  “I am so proud of this squad.

“It was a hard game to get over the line, Orkney Dragons put us under quite a bit of defensive pressure. It was our first game since November so we took a bit of time to get going, but after 15 minutes we settled into it.

“There was some really good teamwork from the ladies on the pitch in one of toughest games of the season and it was brilliant to see some of the skills and work that has been going in at training being showcased on the pitch in a match.”

Head coach Mike Flavell added:  “We are all very happy to win the league with a 100 percent record.

“To win while not be at our best on Saturday is a good problem to have and that is something we can work on during the National Shield.

“We’ll need to be at our best throughout the event if we want to get to Silver Saturday again.”

Tamzin Rosie (3), Caitlin Harvey, Emmie Smith, Helen Richard and Lauren Gunn were the Caithness try scorers versus Orkney with Carly Erridge converting three of them.

Since the league success, the Shield campaign has begun with bonus point wins over Peterhead and Oban Lorne.
