Scotland women and the 14 month journey – WRWC 2025 build up: Ainsworth, MacRae and Mellanby named in U20 Team of Series and Fletcher is MVP

Three Scotland U20 players have been named in the Six Nations Women’s Summer Series Team of the Series with Poppy Fletcher named the Scottish MVP from the tournament.

At the at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach in Wales in July, the young Scots lost out to England, Wales and Ireland, but there were some good patches in games and some strong individual performances.

The highest-scoring XV from the tournament has been named.

The Team of the Series, according to the Opta Index stats gurus, comprises four French players, three each from Italy and Scotland, two apiece from Wales and Ireland and one from England.

Stirling County and Glasgow Warriors stand-off Ceitidh Ainsworth, Edinburgh University and Edinburgh Rugby centre Lucy MacRae and Biggar and Glasgow full-back Poppy Mellanby are the Scots in there.

An MVP – most valuable player – has been named from each country and for Scotland it was Edinburgh University and Glasgow loosehead prop Poppy Fletcher. She was one of the four-strong leadership group for the event along with Merryn Gunderson, Nicole Flynn and Emily Norval.

After the event, Team of the Series member Ainsworth told the Six Nations website:  “I just want to continue to improve, go back to club, continue working on all aspects of my game and then see how far it can get me.

“I think you’ve seen that the Summer Series is great. So many from last year have gone on to the senior international team and now got caps for the country.

“We want to develop and continue to use the U20s as a place to get experience and develop and it is a good competition to then progress further.

“We used to not have a clear pathway, it used to just be your club and then straight to the full national team, but getting the experience of having pre-tournament camps with the U20s now, going away for two weeks with the team and getting used to playing at a higher level is a good stepping stone to getting to that national team.”

  • After defeat to Ireland in their final match before the Women’s Rugby World Cup at the weekend, Scotland are down to number eight in the World Rugby rankings.

Since going a record high of five in September, the Scots have won four and lost six Tests.

The 32-strong squad for the World Cup will be named on Thursday.

  • Scotland’s women’s rugby league team had an encouraging first ever match on Saturday, losing out 18-12 to Wales.
