The Siobhan Cattigan Trophy is “great recognition for a player that represented the thistle with pride”, says Scotland head coach Sione Fukofuka.
On Sunday, when the Scots take on Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in their fifth and final Women’s Six Nations game for 2026 (2.30pm live on BBC iPlayer), they will not just be playing for match points but also for the new silverware.
The trophy is named after Scotland international forward Siobhan Cattigan who sadly passed away in 2021 at the age of 26. Cattigan, a back-row, won 19 caps for Scotland between 2018 and 2021.
Scotland and Ireland have always had strong links in the women’s game and this trophy will bind the nations together even more going forward as it will be played for in fixtures between the two in the future after Sunday too.
Cattigan cited the famous 15-12 away win against Ireland in the 2018 Six Nations as one of her personal highlights in a Scotland shirt while her family has strong ties to Ireland.
Both Scottish Rugby and the Irish Rugby Football Union are delighted that Siobhan’s family will be present at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday for the presentation of the Siobhan Cattigan Trophy for the first time and Fukofuka said: “It [the trophy] is a great recognition for a player that represented the thistle with pride.
“Players within the squad had an opportunity to see the cup a couple of weeks ago and it commemorates the things that were really special to her.
“We are really proud for the trophy to be part of the fixture and it’s a fixture that she clearly loved and enjoyed and she helped Scotland win in Ireland.
“It’s a nice representation of what it means to represent the thistle.”
A number of players in the Scotland matchday 23 this weekend played alongside Cattigan for Scotland.
