McCallum at the double in Waterboys opening win

Co-Captain Pete McCallum led the way with a try double as the PROJECX Waterboys got their Hong Kong 10s 2017 Pool A campaign off to a winning start.

At the Hong Kong Football Club, the team defeated the Irish Vikings 21-7.

Ayr’s McCallum started things off in the fifth minute with a try which was converted by Scotland Sevens cap Fraser Lyle.

Two minutes later the duo were at it again and it was 14-0 to the Scottish select outfit.

Just before the break after 10 minutes, the Vikings scored a converted try of their own to leave things at 14-7 at the interval.

A big second 10 minutes was needed by the Waterboys and some of the replacements did great job.

It took until the 19th minute for the third try to come, Stirling County’s Ruairidh Leishman crashing over with Heriot’s Tom Wilson converting.

After the 21-7 victory, McCallum said:  “We are pleased to get the win and get a game under our belts.

“We will rest up now and prepare for the second tie this afternoon.”

Elsewhere in Pool A, Penguin International started things off with a 36-0 victory over Devil’s Advocate Silver Dragons.
