Lyle and Robbins selected for HK trip

Scotland Sevens cap Fraser Lyle has been added to the PROJECX Waterboys squad for the Hong Kong 10s.

The 28-year-old Glasgow Warriors man has played a number of tournaments for Calum MacRae’s national side over the last couple of years on the Sevens World Series.

As a result he will be a great addition to Craig Sorbie and Jamie Parker’s squad for the event on April 5 and 6.

And winger Ben Robbins, who earned his first Scotland Sevens cap in the Sydney event earlier this year, is also travelling with the Waterboys.

“It’s exciting to be involved for the Waterboys and I’ve heard from guys who have played before that this is a great event,” Fraser said.

“Having watched the tournament the last couple of years, the pitch is quite small with some big lads so I expect it to be physical and very hot out there.

“I’ve enjoyed my season being mainly involved with the Scotland Sevens side after a full pre-season with Glasgow then some club games for Stirling County.

“Before this season, my rugby journey has been a long one! I started at Morrison’s Academy and Crieff before playing for Aberdeen University, Aberdeen Grammar and a spell in Canada.

“With the group of players we’ve got I’d say we can expect some pretty exciting running rugby and we will look to keep the ball alive. I play as a back in 15s and a forward in sevens and will play where required.”

Ben Robbins

Ben, 20, stated: “It is a big honour to be picked, the week in Hong Kong is one of the most famous and prestigious in the world rugby calendar so to be there in the mix and to be part of it is really great

“My club season has been going well. I started the season on loan at London Scottish where I didn’t receive much game time, but earned a good bit of experience.

“I then returned to Currie who were struggling, but we have managed to get things back on track after a dodgy start and made the BT Premiership play-offs which was massive for us.

“I have been combining training with Scotland Sevens and playing 15s for Currie at the weekends which has been a challenge at times, but I’m enjoying my rugby at the moment.

“With the personnel the Waterboys have I think we can expect to play some exciting attacking rugby.

“We have the size to get go forward ball, great distributors and then hopefully the likes of Kerr Gosman and myself will have the pace to put some tries away.

“I think we have a really balanced team and we will be able to play any style of rugby necessary to get a positive outcome in this event.”

The PROJECX Waterboys are in Pool A at the Hong Kong 10s with last year’s winners Penguins International, the Irish Vikings and the Devils Advocate Dragons.

Once again PROJECX, International Power and Water Investments, JA Resorts & Hotels, Ace Property Management, Sarcogent Solutions and Ethigen are supporting the team. They also have a range of new sponsors including Kyloe Restaurant (Signature Pubs), Orion Systems, St. Julians Advisory, 4 Navitas and Bureau.
